In Marseille, the World Conservation Congress IUCN 2020 opens for the first time to the general public
The World Conservation Congress, to be held from 11 to 19 June 2020 in Marseille, is opening to the general public for the first time. More than 100,000 visitors are expected at Parc Chanot. The event will help to define the environmental work agenda for the next decade.
In June 2020, Marseille will host the World Conservation Congress, organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Agence France Biodiversity. For ten days, 10 to 12,000 congress participants from governments, business, academia, indigenous peoples and civil society will converge on Parc Chanot for the world’s largest nature conservation event.
Update on Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)
IUCN
In light of recent developments in France related to coronavirus disease (COVID-19), IUCN and the French government are in close discussion on the possible impacts this situation will have on the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020. Together we are carefully considering what decisions might be taken.
The health and well-being of participants is our primary concern and we continue to follow the recommendations of national and international public health authorities regarding coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Should any changes occur, we will announce them here and in the Congress newsletter.
Held every four years, “the World Conservation Congress is designed to facilitate reflection, collaborative solutions and decision-making to address critical challenges facing our world,” says IUCN. “The 2020 Forum, a hub for public debate, will focus on demonstrating best practice and innovation in nature conservation, building new partnerships and defining a roadmap for action.

An open-access event
For the first time since its inception in 1948, this congress is open to the general public. Events will take place on the central stages as well as in the individual pavilions. Nearly half of the space allocated to the event will thus be accessible free of charge and without registration. More than 100,000 visitors are expected and will be able to participate and experience the event in various ways. First of all through exhibition areas. Over 13,000 m2, “villages” will be designed to offer total immersion in the heart of the themes that will be addressed at the congress.
Four related to the main dimensions of nature: “managing landscapes and territories for nature and people”; “conserving fresh water to preserve life”; “restoring the health of the oceans”; “accelerating mitigation and adaptation to cope with climate change”. Three with enabling conditions: “support rights and ensure effective and equitable governance”; “optimize economic and financial systems for sustainability”; and “advance knowledge, learning, innovation and technology”.
