Visit Marseille in 4 days

You have to see the Panier district, the old charity, the shopping center, the terraces of the port, not for the center but for the view on the Frioul, a magnificent view, the cathedral la major, the Museum of the civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean (mucem).

A real joy this city, and of course our Notre Dame de la Garde the most beautiful view, take the little tourist train 8 euros, which makes a stop at our Cathedral, and passes every 20 minutes.

I recommend a morning full of sunshine to the island of Friuli… a short walk to the ruins of Caroline Hospital. Magnificent view of Marseille, the white of the stone, the blue of the sea, and the red of the poppies of April in the foreground: it’s magnificent! The Calm…
The creeks shelter you from the possible mistral wind…

I advise (on Marseille) to go and see the historical herbalist’s shop of Father Blaise, close to the canebière (this herbalist’s shop also proposes essential oils, vegetable oils as well as dietetic products).

Visit of the Vallon des Auffres, a stone’s throw from Marseille
Something else to see is the Vallon des Auffres! Pure happiness! Located 20 minutes by car from the centre of Marseille.

1. Are you looking for an activity by boat from Marseille?

Are you looking for activities to do in Marseille? Rent a catamaran for a day to discover the calanques of Marseille or the blue coast click here, here or click here to get more ideas!
The creeks except the one of Port-Miou are not in Cassis but in Marseille (En-Vau, Port-Pin, Sugiton, Sormiou, l’Oule … ), these creeks are really beautiful, it would be a shame not to take advantage (weather permitting) to make a day trip!

2. Discover the Calanques of Marseille

No car is needed to discover the magnificent Calanques de Marseille, buses will take you to Luminy (district of Marseille and main starting point of all hikes) or to the Madrague de Montredon (another district of Marseille and geographical limit of the park on the Marseille side).

You will find other buses to start a hike from Sormiou or Morgiou and even a bus that connects Marseille to Cassis and that will allow you to go down to Carpiagne to reach the Calanque d’En-Vau.

And don’t forget to bring the map ign “Les calanques de Marseille à Cassis” if you don’t want to get lost, I’m not kidding, and at least two liters of water!

The best season: May or June … there are so many flowers that it’s a real palette of colours and it’s not too hot yet.

Last precision, never leave the paths marked out for the respect of the fauna and flora, you would risk crushing endemic plants or small animals that can only be found in the creeks.

Finish your stay by visiting the calanques by boat from Marseille, the boat will take you to Cassis and back and you will see each calanque.

3. Where to sleep in Marseille

If you are looking for a place to sleep in Marseille, the best place to stay is the Panier district, the typical district of Marseille. You’ll see it’s really nice!

On the map below, I put it in yellow. You’ll see during your research that there is not a lot of accommodation in this neighborhood, anyway you have a landmark to look for where to stay in Marseille. I put the orange areas on the map, they are also good places, and close to the Panier district.

Count 20 minutes on foot to reach the Saint Charles train station from the Panier district. And if you take the metro, you either have the red line, M2, and stop at Jules Guesde station, or you take the blue line, M1, and stop at Colbert station.

Here are some nice addresses if you are looking for somewhere to stay in Marseille:

Le Sylvabelle Appartments, well located because it’s only a few steps away from the Panier district ! The staff is also very nice. A must see for accommodations in Marseille !
L’hôtel Edmond Rostand, is also very well located. It is a good address is you are looking for good value for money for a hotel in Marseille.

4. Where to go out in Marseille

Going out in Marseille would start at a restaurant at noon in the sun: Les Halles de la Major, a real “coup de coeur” where everyone chooses his dish. There’s something for everyone! Various and fresh products, a great welcome, and it’s a change from the tourist restaurants of the old port. They are almost in front of the Terrasses du Port.

5. Visit Marseille by boat

A very nice thing to do is take a boat ride. You have a site that offers to rent a private boat, and if you don’t have a license, you can also rent it with the captain. In Marseille you have the Sud Plaisance who proposes that.

There are two metro lines in Marseille, so it’s not very complicated! The red line, the M2, and the blue line, the M1.

The M2 goes to the Palais des sports de Marseille.
